“Each step of the walk in is beautiful and absolutely worth it for the peace and rest in this beautiful cottage in this stunning location. The stars at night and the sunrise over the water were outstanding. The cottage is spotless, homely and welcoming and Alexa is a great and helpful host.

“You round the corner after your 30 minutes walk (as it is the first time along the path you have bought way too much – top tip – don’t try and carry too much!) and there she stands – your little bit of heaven for a week!
The description is spot on, a perfect balance of keeping the character without losing the mod cons but why bother with a TV – we spent all our time looking out the window, day and night! The sunsets, sunrises and the night sky, oh we could go on! And eagles, otters, hares, the seal that sounded like he was on 40 a day and so many birds. The bird book and the binoculars came in very handy.
The Wifi works a treat but phone signal is best half way down the path towards the Lighthouse. Parking in Tobermory was never an issue and the Co-op and the other shops provided all that you need. We cooked the majority of the time (partly due to Covid and also the fact that it was dark by 8pm) and had some great local produce.
Another tip is to do a certain amount of planning – if you are going into Tobermory take your rubbish and recycling (there is a recycling tip on the way to Glengorm Castle) and then you have a empty backpack to load up with the essentials (wine, beer and pies in our case!).
If you fancy a spot of adventure and a holiday with a difference, all that is required is the ability to walk 30 minutes along a mainly flat path and a love of the great outdoors. It is a wonderful feeling to give a wave to the walkers that pass the cottage and seeing the look of envy on their faces, Alexa, we just loved being ‘the keepers of the light’ for a week, a very special time, thank you!

“Fantastic location and very friendly service from Alexa. Great views of the sound from the master bedroom – a really memorable experience. Thanks!

“Alexa is a wonderful host. She greeted us when we arrived and was available if we needed anything. Alexa gave us tip offs when there was wildlife to be seen, and made suggestions where to see wildlife on the island. The cottage is wonderful, was worth the walk for the beautiful setting. Everything was sparkling clean and very homely. Lovely place to relax, which is just what we needed. As long as you don’t mind a 30 minute walk (this is what it took us), we would highly recommend staying at Alexa’s place.

“The light house cottage location & interior is second to none. Alexa is a wonderful host & ensures your stay is perfect in every way. Facilities in the cottage are A++++ & you really do have a holiday away from it all. We’ve stayed twice now & look forward to returning again soon.

  • Stijn & Katrien, July 2020

“Amazing and remote place to stay near the lighthouse. If you are looking for remoteness and solitude in great scenery, this is it!

  • Clare & Alex, August 2019

“This is truly a unique & amazing place to stay. The walk along the light house path is the start of your holiday & the lighthouse cottage has been renovated beautifully. The location is breathtaking…. even when it is raining. There are not many places where you share your holiday with such an abundance of wildlife. We have already booked our next break there & cannot wait to return. Thank you Alexa for creating an incredible & inspirational place to stay.

“Rubha nan Gall is magnificent, hard to describe adequately. We enjoyed the path to the lighthouse as well as the remote place of the cottage. Alexa has done a wonderful job renovating the cottage and we felt very welcome. It is a great place to slow down and just enjoy the view and the surrounding. If Mull wouldn’t be such an interesting island, you could easily stay all the week in the cottage, just looking outside the wonderful windows. Mull has beautiful beaches bays, castles and mountains (even a munro – Ben More) and Alexa’s lighthouse perfectly catches the atmosphere of the island. We had a really memorable week there, and would return any time!

  • Joan, August 2019

“Rubha nan Gall is a completely fabulous place for an away from it all break. The location is stunning and the cottage is extremely stylish and comfortable – the photos don’t do it justice. Alexa was a great host and we had a week of beautiful weather.

  • Anthony and Anne, June 2019

“Magical place. The sound of the oystercatchers, the gold finches darting in and out of the garden, the views, the light, all create a unique place to escape from the turbulent world. The walk from Tobermory is worth every yard.

  • James and Jackie, June 2019

“If you want to get away from everything this is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in the Northern Hemisphere. Alexa has created a modern up to date refuge out of a ruin. Be prepared to carry everything you need. Pack lightly and only bring what you need for a couple of days at a time, it’s pretty safe to leave things in your car.

  • Sally & Laura, May 2019

“What a gorgeous place to stay, we had such a lovely holiday and were very lucky with the sunshine. The cottage is very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Alexa is a great host and very helpful with info and tips without being intrusive. The footpath to the property is a beautiful 25 minute walk with stunning views. We booked our stay for a special birthday and it lived up to our expectations in every way. Many thanks.

  • Paul & Ann Marie, May 2019

“This truly is a fantastic cottage in a beautiful location. We spent a week here in early may, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The views are amazing and the tranquility only broken by the sound of the sea and the song of birds. We were sad to leave this place.

  • Yunus & Maire, April 2019

“We had a wonderful stay. It was everything the photos in the listing promised and much more. The seal and porpoises (or were they dolphins ?) in the water next to the lighthouse that we occasionally spotted were a real bonus. A peaceful relaxing retreat but also a good base to explore the marine and bird life around the Isle of Mull.

  • Claudia, April 2019

“It’s difficult to write a review for Rubha nan Gall because it’s hard to find a better place in a better spot, but you also don’t want to tell everyone because its remoteness and its location at the end of a footpath is part of the charm. This off-grid lighthouse-keeper’s cottage is hardly a cottage – spacious, stone-flagged, tastefully presented in dove greys and neutrals, simply kitted out but with everything you need, comfortable beds and with a generous, large bathroom to every room. Alexa is friendly and helpful and also discreet in spite of the fact she lives onsite. This is a real find: just please don’t all book it out because I want to go back.

  • Richard, April 2019

“This is a fantastic house in a fantastic location. Tobermory is a 2km beautiful walk away with tremendous restaurants and pubs… Cafe Fish particularly impressive. We will be coming back again in the future…

  • Paula & Tim, September 2018

“This is a beautiful unique cottage in a wonderful location. There were just 2 of us but it has en suite rooms for up to 6 and a lovely large kitchen diner with log burner so great for groups. Alexa is a great host too which made it even better. There is also something special about walking to the lightkeepers cottage (2k) along a coastal path. Great for a morning run too! Magical to take morning coffee (or evening wine!) outside to look across the bay with the lighthouse next to you and wildlife and boats on the water. Highly recommend. Village of Tobermory, which has bars, restaurants, cafe, arts centre, boat trips, etc, only 25 minutes walk away.

  • Stephen & David, July 2018

“The Lighthouse Cottage is in a fantastic location, it’s beautiful inside and out and the perfect place from which to explore North Mull and the wider island. Alexa was generous with both her time and her hospitality and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a unique place to stay. The walk to the lighthouse along the beautiful coast path from Tobermory adds to the thrill of arriving at the cottage. Staying here is definitely one of those unforgettable holidays!

  • Jürgen & Wiebke, June 2018

“In short, once you are there you never want to leave again! A fantastic place to stay that has everything you could possibly need and more! Our highest recommendation!

  • Adam, May 2018

I have been to Mull a few times recently and really love it. I’ve previously stayed in Tobermory, so it was a really exciting change to be able to stay at the newly opened Rubha Nan Gall Lighthouse Cottages, and what a truly amazing experience it was.

It’s the perfect place to get away from it all, with its own fairytale footpath from Tobermory. The cottages are ideal for those who travel light and love to take walks with such amazing views and fascinating wildlife too. The walk to the Lighthouse is a surprisingly popular tourist activity in itself during the daylight hours. At night the cottages are wonderfully isolated and incredibly peaceful.

The cottages have been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard with the perfect mix of modern and original features. Each bedroom has en-suite facilities which a major bonus, with amazingly comfortable beds too. The ’signature’ room has the most incredible views over the lighthouse and the Sound of Mull which is just an unbelievable way to wake up if you are able to bag that room!

The kitchen has just about all the equipment you might need, from toaster to dishwasher, and is a lovely rustic place to share a meal and talk of the day’s adventures. The sitting room is wonderfully cosy and on the rare occasion that Scotland is on the cool side the open fire is a must.

Some great environmentally friendly touches have been incorporated too (such as its own supply of spring water, solar panels to charge the generator, environmentally friendly toiletries provided etc.) which are a major feature of these beautiful cottages for the environmentally conscious. On the other hand the Wifi works great throughout the property, whilst you may have to go for a little walk to get a mobile signal (mine worked about 50 yards away!) so you can even get away from your mobile for a few hours.

I could go on for pages about these wonderful cottages, as I had such a truly unforgettable experience there.

If you are looking for a little slice of perfection and a chance to get away from it all then go to Rubha Nan Gall Lighthouse Cottages, I am sure you will have an unforgettable experience. I will be back every chance I get.”

“It’s been 20 years since my last visit to Mull and my desire to return has probably lasted just as long so when I had the opportunity to visit last month I didn’t think twice. We had the good fortune to have Rubha nan Gall lighthouse keeper’s cottage as our home from home for the week and what an inspired choice that turned out to be. Recently renovated to a very high standard, Alexa has done an astounding job in creating the perfect hideaway whilst also providing an extremely comfortable base from which to explore Mull’s many charms. A big part of the cottage’s appeal was the feeling you were staying at the edge of the world. There is no road access here (there’s ample free parking in town) and the final approach is a stunning twenty minute walk from Scotland’s colour capital, Tobermory. During May the coastal path is fringed with bluebells and wild garlic and there is something quite magical about heading ‘up the path’ at the end of the day as the sun sets across the water over the Ardnamurchan peninsula.

Evenings outside with a cheeky bottle of red listening to the rhythms of the ocean and the chatter of oystercatchers under a pastel sky is just one of the memories I will take away from this island paradise. Do yourself a favour – just visit!”

“Stunning location and fabulous accommodation, thanks a million!”

  • Gayle & Steve, July 2017

“Thank you so much Alexa. Rubha nan Gall is such a very special place and we’ve loved every minute here. The location and isolation is bliss. We loved our walks to and from the cottage and coming back to the sunsets at the end of the day was fabulous. The cottage is just beautiful, you have done such an immense job with such a lot of thought and care – it has been tremendously luxurious. We have loved the rock pools and the whale spotting, though the minke evaded us this time!”

  • Gary Fletcher, Trac Engineering, Northern Lighthouse Board, June 2017

“It’s been a great pleasure staying here whilst carrying out works on the Lighthouse. We couldn’t ask for better accommodation or location, it ranks right up there out of the 70+ lighthouses visited so far! Thank you so much for being a brilliant host, always smiling.”

  • Scottish Association for Marine Science Research Team, October 2016

“Now officially baptised as a harbour porpoise lighthouse field station, perfect for research and social activities alike.  After 4 weeks we can honestly say we don’t want to leave! You’ve done an amazing job in the cottage and the views are just spectacular!”
